I happen to stumble upon your website by accident but I'm very glad that I did. I've been looking for another insider's take on Oregon (I'm in Portland) that isn't from a hipster's point of view. Glad I found your site. Cheers!

Interesting to read other replies. My dad, Frank Narusch, Sr. was an underground miner for the Healy River Coal Corp at Suntrana from 1948 -1960 when the mine shut down, mostly due to seam closures due to mine fires. The rest of our family; my Mom, Valaria, sisters Mary Ann and Anna Carol and I arrived at Suntrana Sept 2, 1952, just a couple of days after the big fire that destroyed most of the mine facilities, and when the Healy R was in it's usual fall flood. Mary Ann, then, 12, and I, age 10, went to the one-room school in Suntrana that first year taught by Mr. Barnhill. I hung out mostly with Lloyd Lamb and Bobby Ableman, but remember the Hersch twins well and their sister Judy.

Lonnie Lamb moved to Vermont several years ago, Marie Lamb still lives in Fairbanks with her daughter Connie, Parlee lives in Two Rivers (about 30 miles out of Fairbanks) and Lloyd lives in Wyoming. I have addresses and phone nos for Lonny and Parlee.

Larry McLaury lives in North Pole, AK. Carey Vlahovich lives in Redmond, WA and was a real estate developer last I heard (15 years ago). Stephen Vlahovich may still be in Anchorage, but I haven't seen him in over 10 years.

I was on a plane about 10 years ago with Charles Ledbeder, who was an accountant at the mine in the '50's. He was an oil financial consultant then.

Roland Usibelli, a nephew of Emil and cousin of Joe who now owns the mine, passed away a few months ago in Anchorage.

My sister Mary Ann Joiner lives in Auburndale, FL. My mother Valaria and sister Anna Wrobel both have homes in
Scranton, PA where they moved after my father died in 1966.

I have a lot more info, just running out of time right now.
Most of these names should ring a bell with most who went to school at Suntrana and Usibelli schools.

I remember the tiny cabin (we lived in until we had the available housing at the mine) and the rope bridge. I remember running across that bridge and my Mother worried whenever I did.Berry picking too. The schoolhouse we were too young to attend. Quite an emotional experience returning to Suntrana last year. We lived there around 1956-57. I remember one of the neighbor boys drowning when he fell through the ice on the river after a chinook wind.I can't remember the families name.
We kids loved living there, , but Mom hated it. I remember how upset she was when we told her the little cabin we were to stay in reminded us of Davy Crockett's Cabin and it did not have a toilet. She was a 22 year old girl with 3 kids 5 and under.Everything flown in. All her family lived in Seattle. My Dad also worked at the commissary. I remember the old sourdoughs coming in to buy supplies from us.When my folks went to a party in Suntrana when we lived at the mine we had young coalminers as babysitters. Mom said they missed their own families so they watched us.I also remember some of the bush pilots visiting us. There was quite a active community. They made it a great place for kids. Especially holidays.I remember they had real deer hooked up to a sleigh driven by one of the miners. Roy was his name is all I remember.I will go back for a visit. Especially since I have family living in Wasilla.

My family lived at the Suntrana Mine from 9/53 to 2/54. We drove the Alcan Highway up to Fairabanks and traveled by train to the mine. My father worked in the coal mine there for about 6 months until he was layed off. My older sister and I attended a one room school at the Usibelli Mine during our stay which included grades 4-8. We lived in a tiny log cabin with no running water or bathroom. There was a swinging bridge across the river that connected the mine site with the family housing and once a week we crossed the bridge to see a movie that was shown for the families. We spent a lot of time playing cards and sledding in the snow at minus 30 below zero. Children living there at that time were the Ablemans, Lambs, Hersh, Johnsons and Prendergasts.
It was a wonderful adventure for a child of 9 and I am so glad I have the memories.

I lived in Suntrana, then moved to Usibelli Mine(spelling)? in 1956 when my step-dad was hired as accountant for the mine. His name was David Manson. We lived in an old cabin before we moved into the housing at Usibelli. My cousin and I went for a visit last June2008. The first for us since living there in 1956. I found some old housing and the schoolhouse etc. in Healy. We drove as far as we could but didnot want to try the road to Suntrana. (It was a scary ride in 1956!)We had wonderful memories of all the people we met.
